Resetting Course for New Semester or School Year

At the start of a new school year, or start of a new semester, your Physics LE course(s) will need to be emptied of student data from the previous group of students. The course roster, gradebook, student results, and analytics can all be quickly reset to give you a clean slate for the incoming group of students. Your assignments, quizzes, simulation exercises, and course content will all be retained and can be used again.

The reset process also unlocks existing assignments & quizzes so that problems may once again be added or removed. (Problems cannot be added or removed once the assignment or quiz has been attempted by students.)

IMPORTANT: Resetting your course will remove student data from your course forever. It is recommended that you first export your Gradebook to your local file system to have a permanent record of student grades. See the Instructor Guide Gradebook - Export Gradebook Data.

Resetting your Course

The following steps will bring you to the Reset Course page, the options on this page are described in the Reset Course Options section below. If you have multiple courses setup in Physics LE you will need to perform this task separately for each course. None of the options on the Reset Course page will delete assignments, quizzes, or simulation exercises you created; all your course content will be preserved and available for use after your course is reset.

  1. In the side navigation menu under My courses, select your course (or a particular course if you have multiple courses) that you wish to reset. This will bring you to the Course page.

  2. Click the gear menu on the upper right side (directly above the Turn Editing On green button) and select Reset Course. This will bring you to the Reset Course page.

  3. Select your desired options as described below and click the Reset course button at the bottom of the page.
IMPORTANT: Clicking the Reset course button will delete student data from your course forever.

Reset Course Options

General

Delete events, Delete all notes, Delete all comments: These options will clear your course of calendar events, student notes, and student comments which you may have added in your gradebook. All three options should be selected.

Gradebook

Delete all gradebook categories: This option will remove gradebook categories and the gradebook structure you created. Unless you wish to start over with a non-structured gradebook, you may find it convenient to retain the structure and leave this option unselected.

Delete all manually added grades: This option will remove grade items that were manually added to the gradebook. These are any assignments and quizzes administered outside of Physics LE with the scores manually recorded in the gradebook. This option should be selected.

Course sections (groups)

Delete all Course sections (groups): This option will remove all course sections you may have setup for the gradebook. If you would like to reuse the same course sections this option should remain unselected. If you plan on starting over with new course sections then this option should be selected.

Remove all Course section (group) members: This option will remove all students from course sections and should be selected.

Student Grade Data

Delete all student grade data (Important): This option will remove student scores which were automatically recorded in the gradebook, student results, and all related analytics. This is the most important option for removing student data from your course and should be selected.

Delete all student overrides, Delete all group overrides: These options will remove individual student overrides and group overrides associated with Activities. Both options should be selected.

Removing Students from your Course

After resetting your course, students should be removed from the course roster. To remove students, go to the Course page and then select Course Roster from the side navigation menu. Use the Unenroll icon (garbage can icon) associated with a student’s name to remove the student from the course. You can also use the options at the bottom of the Course Roster page to select all users in the course and remove them with a single action.
IMPORTANT: Be careful not to remove yourself as the course instructor.
